How To Pay For A Hotel In Cash

Most people don’t have a clue how to pay for a hotel in cash – seeing as we are heading for a cashless society, most people just assume that it can’t be done. But it can be done in a roundabout way with a gift voucher, and here’s how.

Pop along to your local Tesco supermarket and pick up a hotel.com gift card. You can go to the kiosk and top up between £15 – £100, so you may need to buy more gift cards depending on the cost of your hotel stay.

You could choose your venue on the Hotels.com website first so that you know exactly how much to add. You don’t have to add the exact amount but it does make things easier.

SCRATCH the PIN code off. If you make a mistake and try to peel it off, don’t worry, all is not lost. You can call them (number on the back of the gift card). They won’t be able to help but they will give you their email address. Email them the account number on the card and you should get a reply within a couple of hours. They’ll send you a new PIN code to use.

Then go to the Hotels.com website and select your venue. Check “Pay by gift voucher”. If the cost is more than the £100 maximum per gift card, don’t add the account number or PIN number just yet. They’ll be a link for you to combine the cards, so do that first. If you don’t do this, a box will appear for you to pay the balance with your bank card/s. If you get that far and realise your mistake, just refresh the page and start again.

It also makes sense to add the balance of your gift cards in writing on the cards otherwise it can get confusing when you have several laying around.

When you get to the hotel, they won’t know how you have paid (we don’t think) and they wouldn’t know how to pay for a hotel in cash and will assume you have paid with your debit or credit card. Because you have paid via a third party though, the hotel may ask you for your address. We don’t think this is a legal requirement though. It’s a good idea to book in your own name just incase they ask you for ID which we haven’t come across as yet.

On the Hotels.com website, you will find apartments that you can also pay for with the gift cards. However, the landlord will usually ask for an “incidental damages” payment of around £100 – £200 which you will get back after your stay, but this usually has to be paid for with your debit/credit card.

How To Pay For A Hotel In Cash – Final Thoughts

Various websites say that some hotels still accept cash and maybe they do, but they are becoming a rare find nowadays. Why bother with the suspicious looks  and attitude when you can do it as stated on this page. You don’t even need to register an account with Hotels.com to do so.
